ABOUT US

We are a 100% not for profit, volunteer run organisation.

Fruit Share Adelaide was founded in 2023 by South Australian resident, Brett Dunstone, who was inspired by The Hidden Orchard, a similar scheme in Ballarat, Victoria.

Very quickly, Fruit Share Adelaide has evolved into a team of volunteers committed to preventing food waste by collecting unwanted or surplus fruit for free distribution to food charities and the community.

With its ideal climate for growing fruit, Adelaide is home to thriving fruit trees that can be found flourishing in backyards, orchards and public spaces across the region. However, sadly, much of this goes neglected and ends up rotting on the ground or thrown away.

Many homeowners find themselves with more fruit than they need or can use from their backyard trees. Others struggle with the time or ability to harvest the fruit themselves.

Commercial orchards can often only sell on visually appealing produce. This leads them to discard damaged or low-grade fruit that could still be used for eating or cooking.

Public spaces also allow fruit from trees go unpicked, left to fall to the ground and go to waste.

All of this usable, nutritious fruit could be feeding people. Instead, it is left to spoil.

Through our coordinated volunteer effort, Fruit Share Adelaide aims to put this fruit to good use.

The fruit that is harvested is shared amongst the tree owners, our volunteer pickers, and local charities for use in meal and food relief programs.
